Judice, LA (March 14, 2026) – A 21-year-old motorcyclist from Duson was killed on Friday afternoon, March 13, in Lafayette Parish after a truck turned in front of him. The crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Duhon Road near Lagneaux Road in the Judice area.
Troopers identified the motorcyclist as Gavin Recktenwald, who was riding a 2019 Kawasaki when he collided with a 2023 Toyota Tacoma. Officials said the driver of the Tacoma failed to yield while making a left turn, causing the collision. Recktenwald was thrown from his motorcycle and sustained fatal injuries despite wearing a helmet. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, and more details will be released as they become available.
Our condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Mr. Recktenwald.
Why Motorcyclists Are Vulnerable in Left-Turn Collisions
Collisions where a vehicle turns in front of a motorcycle are a common cause of serious injury or death. Motorcycles are smaller and less visible than cars, and it can be difficult for drivers to judge their speed or distance.
Even with protective gear and helmets, motorcyclists are at high risk in crashes due to limited protection from impact. Investigators often review the position of vehicles, witness statements, and roadway conditions to understand how the collision occurred.
