Kalihi, HI (May 13, 2026) – A 93-year-old man suffered critical injuries on Monday afternoon following a wrong-way crash on a freeway off-ramp in the Kalihi area, according to Honolulu police.
Authorities said the collision occurred around 12 p.m. on North King Street of the Moanalua Freeway. Investigators reported that the elderly driver was traveling westbound when his vehicle collided with another car heading eastbound.
The second vehicle was driven by a 41-year-old man, police said. Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the 93-year-old driver to a local hospital in critical condition. The other driver reportedly complained of pain but declined medical treatment.
Officials stated that both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Investigators do not believe speed, drugs, or alcohol were contributing factors in the collision.
The crash remains under active investigation.
Our thoughts are with the injured driver, and we hope for his recovery.
Wrong-Way Crashes and Driver Safety
Wrong-way crashes can be especially dangerous because they often occur unexpectedly and frequently involve head-on impacts, which carry a high risk of severe injury or death. These incidents may happen on freeway ramps, divided highways, or at intersections where drivers become confused, impaired, or disoriented.
Low visibility conditions, unfamiliar road layouts, or missed signage can increase the likelihood of a driver entering the roadway in the wrong direction. At highway speeds, opposing vehicles have very little time to react, making these crashes particularly difficult to avoid.
Authorities encourage motorists to remain alert for unusual traffic patterns, such as headlights approaching in the wrong direction, and to immediately report wrong-way drivers when it is safe to do so. Drivers are also reminded to pay close attention to roadway signs, directional arrows, and ramp indicators, especially at night or in complex interchange areas, to help prevent similar incidents.
