How Seatbelt Use Affects Injury Severity in Head-On Crashes
Head-on crashes often result in more severe injuries due to the combined force of two moving vehicles. Safety restraints, such as seatbelts, can significantly reduce the risk of serious harm during these impacts. When a seatbelt is not used, occupants are more likely to be thrown forward, increasing the chance of head and chest injuries.
In many crashes, investigators review whether safety restraints were used to better understand injury outcomes. This detail can help explain why some occupants experience more severe harm than others in similar conditions.
Vehicle type and position also matter. Passengers in smaller vehicles, like minivans, may face higher risks when colliding with larger trucks, especially in direct-impact situations.
