How Multi-Impact Roadway Crashes Involving Scooters Can Occur
Crashes involving electric scooters can become more severe when they happen in active travel lanes. Riders are smaller and less visible than standard vehicles, which can increase the risk of secondary impacts if they fall into the roadway.
When a person is left in a traffic lane after an initial collision, approaching drivers may have little time to react. Factors such as speed, lighting, and traffic flow can affect whether other vehicles can stop in time.
Alcohol impairment is also frequently reviewed in serious crashes. Reaction time, judgment, and lane control can all be affected, increasing the likelihood of striking another vehicle or person on the road.
