Why Drivers and Pedestrians Face Higher Risks Near Schools
School zones often become crowded during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal times. Drivers, families, buses, and students may all be moving through the same streets within a short period of time. Young children can also be harder to see because of their height, especially near parked vehicles or crosswalks.
Traffic patterns around elementary schools may change quickly when cars stop unexpectedly or when groups of students begin crossing the road together. Reduced speed limits are commonly used to help drivers react more safely during busy school hours. Weather, visibility, and distractions inside a vehicle can also affect stopping distance. Communities frequently review crosswalk placement, signage, and traffic flow near campuses to reduce the chance of pedestrian-related roadway emergencies involving children.
