Pedestrian Crash Risks on Busy Roadways
Pedestrian crashes can be especially severe because people on foot have no protection from the force of a vehicle. Even one impact can cause life-threatening injuries, especially on roads where traffic moves at higher speeds.
Nighttime conditions can also affect pedestrian safety. Darkness, headlights, shadows, and road layout may make it harder for drivers and pedestrians to see each other clearly. Roads with multiple lanes may add more risk because vehicles can approach from different positions.
After a serious pedestrian crash, lanes may stay closed for hours. Damaged vehicles, emergency equipment, and scene markings can block travel while the area is cleared. These closures may also cause delays on nearby roads.
