Why Multi-Lane Highway Crashes Can Cause Extended Delays
Crashes on major interstates like I-65 often lead to significant traffic backups, especially when multiple lanes are blocked. High-speed travel and heavy traffic volume can make it difficult to quickly reroute vehicles around an active crash scene.
When both directions are affected, emergency responders must secure a larger area for safety and investigation. This can slow cleanup efforts and extend closure times.
Injury assessments, vehicle removal, and roadway inspection are typically completed before lanes reopen. Even after vehicles are cleared, debris or surface damage may require additional time before traffic can safely resume.
