How Do Police Pursuits in Los Angeles Typically Put Bystanders at Risk?
Police pursuits in Los Angeles occur with some regularity and pose real risks to people who are nowhere near the original incident. When a chase moves through residential or commercial streets in the early morning hours, parked vehicles, pedestrians, and sleeping residents nearby can all end up in harm’s way. The speed and unpredictability of a fleeing driver make it hard for anyone in the area to get out of the way in time.
Parked vehicles are a common point of impact when pursuits end suddenly. Occupants inside a parked car or van may be asleep or unaware of the danger approaching, leaving them no chance to react. South Los Angeles streets, like many urban areas, tend to have dense parking and residential traffic that increases the risk when a chase cuts through the neighborhood at night.
