How Hit-and-Run Crashes Affect Pedestrians at Night
Hit-and-run crashes involving pedestrians are more likely to occur in low-light conditions where visibility is reduced. When roadways lack lighting, drivers may have less time to react to someone walking along the shoulder, especially if the person is not easily visible.
Walking along the edge of the road can increase exposure to passing traffic. Vehicles approaching from behind may not be noticed by the pedestrian, which adds to the risk. In these situations, visibility aids such as reflective clothing can help increase awareness.
Driver behavior also plays a role in these incidents. Staying alert, maintaining safe speeds, and using headlights properly can help reduce the chance of striking a pedestrian, particularly in darker areas.
