Why Do High-Speed Pursuits Increase the Risk of Serious Crashes?
Police pursuits often involve elevated speeds and rapid changes in direction, which significantly increase the risk of losing control of a vehicle. When a driver attempts to evade law enforcement, they may take greater risks, such as ignoring traffic signals, speeding through intersections, or making sudden maneuvers.
These actions not only endanger the driver but also passengers, officers, and others on the road. Crashes involving pursuits frequently result in impacts with fixed objects like poles or barriers, which can lead to more severe injuries due to the abrupt stop.
Passengers inside fleeing vehicles are particularly vulnerable, as they have little control over the situation. Efforts to reduce the risks of pursuits often focus on balancing enforcement with public safety, while encouraging drivers to comply with traffic stops to prevent dangerous outcomes.
