Manhattan, IL (March 16, 2026) – A head-on crash early on Monday morning, March 16, shut down a stretch of U.S. 52 in Manhattan and left one person in critical condition.
Emergency units responded shortly after the crash was reported near the intersection of U.S. 52 and Baker Road. Authorities said the collision involved a Ford F-250 pickup truck equipped with a snowplow and a small SUV.
One man became trapped inside a vehicle and had to be extricated by responders. He was then taken from the scene in critical condition. A second man involved in the crash was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The crash forced the closure of U.S. 52 between Baker Road and Delaney Road while crews worked at the scene. Officials noted that several crashes were reported within about an hour as snowy and icy conditions created hazardous travel in the area.
