Manhattan, NY (April 13, 2026) – Two firefighters were hurt after a large fire broke out inside a building along 7th Ave. The incident was reported at around 6 a.m. on Sunday, April 12, drawing a heavy response from emergency units.
The fire started in the upper floors of a mixed-use structure that neighbors say had been vacant. Thick smoke poured from the top levels as crews used ladder trucks to battle the flames from above.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries during the response and were checked at the scene. No details have been released about the extent of their injuries at this time.
Crews remained at the location for more than two hours as they worked to bring the fire under control. It is still unclear whether anyone was inside the building when the fire began.
A nearby resident said she woke up to the sound of sirens and quickly realized something was wrong as fire trucks filled the street.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
What Factors Can Affect Fire Spread in Multi-Story Buildings?
Fires in multi-story buildings can spread quickly depending on several conditions inside the structure. Open floor plans, broken windows, and stairwells can allow flames and smoke to move between levels faster.
The condition of the building also matters. Older or vacant properties may have damaged wiring, debris, or weak structural areas that can fuel a fire. Lack of regular maintenance may also increase risks.
Fire response efforts often depend on access points and visibility. Thick smoke can limit how clearly crews can see inside, which may slow down progress. Equipment like ladder trucks is often used to reach higher floors and control flames from above.
