How Overcorrection Can Lead to Head-On Collisions
Overcorrection occurs when a driver sharply steers after drifting out of their lane. This sudden movement can cause a vehicle to swing across the roadway, especially at highway speeds.
Rumble strips are often placed along the edges of highways to alert drivers when they begin leaving their lane. The vibration and sound are designed to encourage drivers to gradually correct their path.
If the steering adjustment is too aggressive, the vehicle can cross into oncoming traffic. When this happens on two-way highways, the risk of a head-on collision increases.
Vehicle speed, lane position, and roadway conditions can all affect how a driver reacts when a vehicle leaves its lane. These factors are often reviewed when examining crashes that involve overcorrection.
