Pedestrian Dangers on High-Speed Interstate Highways
Routes carrying regional traffic, such as Interstate 84, can experience serious risks when pedestrians are present on the roadway. In Minidoka County, these highways are designed for vehicles traveling at higher speeds, leaving little time for drivers to react to unexpected hazards.
Interstates typically have few sidewalks or designated walking areas, and drivers may not expect people to be on the roadway. When a person is walking along or across traffic lanes, especially at night or in low visibility conditions, the risk of a collision increases significantly.
Highway incidents involving pedestrians often lead to temporary road closures while crews manage the scene and remove vehicles. These closures help protect responders and drivers while the roadway is cleared and made safe for travel again.
