Rear-End Crashes Involving School Buses
Rear-end crashes involving school buses can be concerning because children may be boarding or sitting inside the bus. A stopped bus can also change traffic flow quickly, especially during morning pickup times. Drivers need enough distance to slow safely when traffic stops ahead.
School buses are larger and heavier than passenger vehicles. Because of that size difference, people inside the smaller vehicle may face a higher risk of injury during a rear-end impact. Bus passengers can also be checked for soreness or other signs of injury after the crash.
When a bus is stopped to pick up a child, nearby drivers must watch for signals, flashing lights, and children near the roadway. Even when no children are hurt, these crashes can cause delays and require medical checks for adults involved.
