Why Single-Vehicle Highway Crashes Can Become Severe
Single-vehicle crashes on highways often result in serious injuries when a car leaves the roadway at high speed. Vehicles that enter wooded areas, embankments, or bodies of water may experience heavy damage due to sudden impacts and unstable terrain. In some cases, rescue efforts become more difficult when a vehicle is difficult to access or partially submerged.
Overnight crashes can also present added risks because of reduced visibility and fatigue. Wet pavement, driver distraction, or loss of control may contribute to a vehicle leaving the highway. Investigators commonly review roadway conditions, tire marks, vehicle damage, and witness statements after these incidents.
Hospital evaluations are also a key part of understanding the severity of injuries. Some crash victims may initially appear stable before more serious medical issues are identified during treatment.
