Why Left-of-Center Crashes Often Lead to Severe Injuries
Head-on crashes caused by vehicles crossing the centerline are among the most serious types of roadway collisions. Opposing traffic moving at roadway speed can create a strong impact force, increasing the likelihood of critical or fatal injuries.
Investigators typically examine lane positioning, steering inputs, and vehicle movement prior to impact to determine why a driver entered the opposing lane. Road conditions, visibility, and possible impairment may also be reviewed during the investigation.
Seatbelt use is another factor commonly documented in these crashes. Restraint systems can reduce the risk of ejection and help lessen injury severity during high-impact collisions.
