How Passing Maneuvers Can Lead to Head-On Collisions
Head-on crashes often happen when a vehicle crosses into opposing lanes, especially during passing attempts on two-lane highways. These roads typically have limited separation between directions of travel, leaving little room for error when drivers misjudge distance or speed.
Factors like darkness, reduced visibility, and traffic flow can increase the risk during overnight hours. Even a brief time in the wrong lane can result in a direct impact with an approaching vehicle.
Highway design, including curves and elevation changes, may also affect how well drivers can see oncoming traffic. In many cases, safe passing depends on clear sightlines and careful timing to avoid dangerous situations.
