Wall Township, NJ (April 19, 2026) – A tractor-trailer crash on Route 34 North caused power outages, a vehicle fire, and major road closures in Wall Township on Saturday morning, April 18. The incident happened around 7:45 a.m. just north of Hurley Pond Road when the truck became entangled with overhead utility lines while exiting a nearby business.
The impact pulled down multiple utility poles, sending live wires onto four northbound vehicles. Two people were trapped inside one of the vehicles, which later caught fire. Emergency units arrived, extinguished the flames, and safely removed the trapped occupants. One person was reported hurt and treated at the scene.
Route 34 was shut down in both directions between Hurley Pond Road and Belmar Boulevard as crews worked in the area. By midday, the southbound side reopened to one lane, while northbound lanes remained closed. About 700 homes and businesses lost power, and restoration efforts were ongoing.
The incident remains under investigation by authorities.
We wish the injured person a speedy recovery.
What Happens When Utility Lines Are Downed in a Crash
When a crash brings down utility lines, the situation can quickly become dangerous for drivers and nearby residents. Live wires may land on vehicles or the roadway, creating a serious electrical hazard. In these cases, people inside vehicles are often advised to remain inside until the area is secured.
Fires can also occur if sparks or electrical contact ignite fuel or nearby materials. Emergency crews typically focus first on controlling any flames and ensuring that power sources are shut off. Road closures are common to protect the public and give utility teams space to repair damaged lines.
Power outages may affect large areas, depending on how many lines or poles are damaged. Crews often work for hours to restore service and ensure the system is safe before reopening roads fully.
