Centralia, IL (June 6, 2026) – Two people were injured on Thursday morning, June 4, following a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Broadway and Pine in Centralia. The crash was reported around 9:50 a.m.
Centralia Police said 30-year-old Candis Pressley of State Route 161 in Kell was driving southbound on Pine when she failed to stop and struck a westbound vehicle traveling on Broadway. The second vehicle was operated by Cameos Balbino of Cedar Street in Salem.
Pressley and a passenger in the Balbino vehicle, identified as 49-year-old Mendez Erasto of Salem, were hurt in the collision. Both were taken to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia for treatment. Officials said Pressley was cited for disobeying a stop sign.
Traffic in the area was temporarily affected while crews assisted those involved and cleared the intersection. Investigators continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the crash. We are thinking of those injured as they recover.
Why Stop Sign Violations Frequently Lead to Intersection Crashes
Intersections controlled by stop signs require drivers to fully stop and confirm that cross traffic is clear before proceeding. When a vehicle enters without yielding properly, there may be little time for approaching drivers to avoid a collision.
Investigators often review traffic control devices, vehicle direction, and driver visibility when examining intersection crashes. Damage patterns and final vehicle positions can also help determine how the contact occurred and which vehicle entered the intersection first.
Urban intersections with multiple travel lanes may increase the risk of side-impact collisions, especially during busy daytime traffic periods. Witness statements and roadway evidence are commonly used to reconstruct how the vehicles approached the crossing before the crash happened.
