Charlotte, NC (May 21, 2026) – A traffic collision partially shut down northbound Interstate 77 near Sunset Road in Charlotte. The roadway problem was reported around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday morning, May 21.
Emergency medical crews evaluated five people for injuries following the chain-reaction traffic disruption. Two of the five northbound lanes near mile marker 15.6 remained closed for more than an hour while crews worked along the highway.
Transportation officials expected the blocked lanes to reopen around 11:38 a.m. No names or vehicle descriptions were included in the initial update from officials handling the roadway backup.
Crews continue examining what led to the Thursday morning traffic emergency along the interstate.
We hope everyone affected by the highway disruption recovers quickly.
Why Interstate Lane Closures Often Create Heavy Delays
Even a partial lane closure on a major interstate can quickly slow traffic for miles, especially during busy daytime travel periods. Drivers approaching blocked lanes often reduce speed suddenly, which can create congestion far beyond the original roadway problem. In some cases, nearby exits and connecting roads also become crowded as motorists search for alternate routes.
Traffic slowdowns may continue even after vehicles are removed because normal flow takes time to return. Emergency crews often need space to assist people involved, clear debris, and inspect the roadway before all lanes reopen safely. Weather, traffic volume, and the number of vehicles involved can also affect how long delays last. On heavily traveled highways, even minor traffic disruptions may lead to backups that continue well after the roadway is reopened.
