Why Crosswalk Injuries Can Be Serious for Pedestrians
Pedestrians have little protection when they are hit by a vehicle, even at lower speeds. Injuries may involve the head, legs, back, or chest, depending on the angle of contact and how the person falls. Crosswalks near intersections can carry added risk because drivers may be turning while also watching traffic signals, other vehicles, and people crossing.
Morning travel can also add challenges. Glare, busy traffic, and limited reaction time may affect both drivers and pedestrians. Road design matters too, including lane width, signal timing, markings, and visibility near corners. Medical care after a vehicle-pedestrian contact may include checks for hidden injuries that are not clear right away. Early treatment records often help explain the full extent of harm after a serious roadway injury.
