Why Air Medical Helicopters Are Dispatched to Serious Crash Scenes
Air medical helicopters may be requested when a crash involves critical injuries or when rapid transportation to a trauma center is needed. The decision is based on factors such as injury severity, the patient’s condition, travel time by ground ambulance, and the availability of specialized medical care.
While a helicopter is en route, emergency crews continue treating the patient at the scene and prepare the patient for transport if air evacuation is needed. Landing zones are carefully selected to provide enough space for safe operations. Quick access to advanced trauma care can improve treatment options for people with life-threatening injuries following a serious crash.
