Emergency units arrived to find smoke coming from the Brookside Plaza Apartment building. All residents had already self-evacuated before crews reached the scene.
Firefighters entered the building and found a fire burning in a first-floor apartment, spreading into a common hallway. The fire was brought under control in roughly 30 minutes.
Six people were evaluated and treated at the scene. One person was taken to a nearby hospital for burns, and three others were taken in for smoke inhalation. Two additional people declined both treatment and transport.
The cause of the fire has not been determined. The incident remains under investigation, and more details will be shared as they become available. Our thoughts are with those affected as they continue to recover.
What Typically Happens After an Apartment Fire in Delaware?
Apartment fires that result in injuries and displacement often require a coordinated response that extends well beyond the initial emergency response. Once the fire is out, building inspectors may assess the structure to determine whether residents can safely return. In cases involving common areas like hallways, damage can affect multiple units even if the fire started in just one unit.
Smoke inhalation is one of the more common reasons people are taken to the hospital after a building fire. It can cause serious respiratory problems, even in people who feel fine at the scene. Burns, even minor ones, are also treated with care since they carry a risk of infection if not properly managed from the start.
