Newton County, IN (April 19, 2026) – One person was killed and another injured following a two-vehicle crash Thursday evening on Interstate 65 in Newton County.

According to Indiana State Police, troopers responded to the southbound lanes near mile marker 232.8, just north of Exit 230, shortly before 7:00 p.m.

Preliminary findings indicate that a semi-truck-trailer was parked on the outside shoulder of the interstate for unknown reasons when a GMC Sierra traveling southbound struck the rear driver’s side of the trailer.

Authorities confirmed that a passenger in the GMC Sierra was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck was transported to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The driver of the semi was not injured.

During the investigation, troopers developed probable cause that the driver of the GMC Sierra, identified as 39-year-old Garret Markovich, was operating the vehicle while intoxicated. He has since been booked into the Newton County Jail on multiple preliminary charges, including operating while intoxicated causing death, reckless homicide, and criminal recklessness resulting in death. Additional misdemeanor charges have also been filed, and chemical test results are pending.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has dash camera footage to come forward as the investigation continues.

We extend our condolences to the family of the deceased victim and wish a full recovery to the injured.

What Makes Collisions with Parked Vehicles on Highways So Dangerous?

Crashes involving parked vehicles on highways can be particularly severe due to the high speeds typically involved. Even when a vehicle is safely positioned on the shoulder, it can still pose a hazard if approaching drivers are impaired, distracted, or unable to react in time.

In this case, the presence of a large semi-truck increased the severity of the collision. Impacts with commercial vehicles often result in significant damage due to their size and structure, especially when struck from behind.

Impairment, such as driving under the influence, further increases the risk of these types of crashes by reducing reaction time, awareness, and judgment. Staying alert, sober, and attentive behind the wheel is critical to preventing tragic outcomes on high-speed roadways.
