Why Grain Bin Incidents Are So Dangerous
Grain bin accidents can turn deadly within minutes. When grain shifts inside a bin, it can create a suction effect that pulls a person under. Once trapped, it becomes very difficult to escape without help.
Grain can behave like quicksand. As it moves, it fills spaces around the body and hardens under pressure. Even being buried up to the chest can make breathing difficult. Full engulfment can happen quickly if the grain continues to flow.
Workers often enter bins to level or clear out crops like soybeans. Safety procedures typically include using harnesses, having spotters outside the bin, and shutting off equipment before entry. Despite these measures, sudden shifts in grain remain a serious hazard in agricultural settings.
