Backing Vehicle Crashes and Pedestrian Risks in Urban Areas
Crashes involving vehicles that are backing up often happen in parking lots, loading zones, and narrow city streets. Larger vehicles, such as delivery trucks, may have significant blind spots that make it harder to see people walking behind them.
Even at low speeds, a reversing vehicle can cause serious harm. Pedestrians may not expect a vehicle to move backward, especially in areas with frequent foot traffic. Reduced lighting during evening hours can also limit visibility for both drivers and those on foot.
Urban neighborhoods like those in Norfolk often combine residential buildings with small businesses and delivery activity. Clear sightlines, use of mirrors and cameras, and heightened awareness in shared spaces can help lower the risk of similar incidents.
