What Is Commonly Reviewed in Crashes Involving Cyclists Entering Roadways?
After crashes involving bicyclists entering roadways from trails or paths, investigators often examine sightlines, traffic flow, and the cyclist’s visibility to approaching drivers. Intersections between bike paths and busy streets can create situations in which reaction time is limited.
Vehicle speed and roadway design are also reviewed to determine how quickly drivers could respond to a cyclist entering traffic. Investigators may examine traffic signals, signage, and lane configurations in the area.
Damage patterns on the bicycle and vehicle can help establish the angle and point of impact. These findings are often used to reconstruct how the collision unfolded in the moments before the crash.
