Why Intersection Crashes on Highway Crossings Can Lead to Multiple Injuries
Crashes at highway intersections often occur when vehicles traveling on high-speed roads meet crossing traffic at the same time. Drivers on divided highways may have limited time to react when another vehicle enters or crosses their path from a side road. This can result in side-impact collisions, which often affect multiple occupants in both vehicles.
In rural and semi-rural areas, intersections like these may serve as major crossing points between local roads and highways. Even when traffic signals or signs are present, misjudging speed or distance can lead to serious crashes.
Safety measures such as seatbelt use can help reduce injury severity, but high-speed impacts can still result in hospitalizations. Investigators typically review vehicle positions, roadway conditions, and timing to understand how these collisions occur.
