Omaha, NE (April 23, 2026) – A crash in north Omaha left three people hurt after a Buick struck a scooter carrying a mother and her daughter. The collision happened around 3 p.m. near 31st Street and Grand Avenue.
Authorities say a 37-year-old woman and her 12-year-old daughter were riding east on a scooter when the Buick hit them. The mother suffered critical injuries. The daughter and the Buick’s driver both suffered serious injuries. None of the three is considered to be in a life-threatening condition.
Authorities believe the Buick’s driver was impaired at the time of the crash. That driver also had outstanding warrants from a separate, unrelated matter.
The police continue to investigate the crash, and more details will be released as they become available.
Our thoughts are with the mother and her daughter as they recover.
What Risks Do Scooter Riders Face in Nebraska Urban Areas?
Scooters are smaller and lighter than most vehicles on the road, which makes riders far more exposed in a collision. When a heavier vehicle, such as a full-size car, strikes a scooter, the people on the scooter absorb most of the impact directly. This size difference alone can turn a low-speed crash into a serious injury event.
In Nebraska, scooter riders are subject to the same traffic laws as other motorists, but they receive much less protection from the vehicle itself. Urban intersections, where cross-traffic is frequent and speeds vary, are especially risky for smaller two-wheeled vehicles. Carrying a passenger increases that risk, since both people are equally exposed, with no structural barrier between them and another vehicle.
