Mission Hills, CA (July 16, 2026) – A 20-year-old woman died following a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 5 South early on Wednesday, July 15. The accident occurred shortly before 1:15 a.m. south of Washington Street.

The California Highway Patrol reported that an Infiniti G37 struck the center divider and became disabled in the travel lanes. A Toyota SUV later hit the stopped car and the young woman.

She was pronounced dead before she could be taken to a hospital. Her name was not included in the initial report. The 18-year-old Infiniti driver and the 52-year-old Toyota driver were not reported injured.

All southbound lanes were temporarily closed at Washington Street while the roadway was examined. Investigators continue reviewing the sequence that led to the wreck.

We extend our deepest condolences to the woman’s family and loved ones.

Why Disabled Vehicles Create Serious Hazards on Freeways

A disabled car in an active freeway lane presents an immediate danger, especially during overnight hours. Approaching drivers may have limited time to recognize that the vehicle is stopped and move into another lane.

Darkness, highway speeds, curves, and surrounding traffic may further reduce reaction time. Hazard lights can improve visibility, but they may not provide enough warning when another motorist is traveling close behind or has a blocked view.

Roadway reviews usually consider lighting, sight distance, tire marks, vehicle damage, and final stopping positions. Traffic cameras and electronic data may help establish when each driver began braking or changing lanes. These details can explain how an initial roadway problem develops into a secondary strike with severe consequences.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
3Consider having your case reviewed by a qualified attorney who can guide you through the next steps. They will safeguard your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.
