Holmes Co., FL (June 18, 2026) – One man died and another was hurt Wednesday afternoon, June 17, after a crash on State Road 81 in Holmes County.
The report said the accident involved a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer. A 76-year-old Westville man was driving the tractor-trailer when an 18-year-old Westville man in a pickup failed to yield to the slow-moving vehicle and hit the rear of it.
Both vehicles went onto the west shoulder and began to roll. The pickup stopped on the west side of State Road 81, while the tractor-trailer came to rest on its side in a ditch.
The 18-year-old driver had minor injuries. The 76-year-old tractor-trailer driver did not survive the collision.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. Our condolences go to the family and loved ones of the man who died.
Rear-End Crashes With Large Trucks Can Become Severe
Rear-end crashes involving large trucks can become serious because of the size and weight of the vehicles involved. When a pickup and tractor-trailer make contact, the force can push one or both vehicles off the roadway.
A shoulder or roadside ditch can add more danger after the first contact. Vehicles may roll, slide, or come to rest in a difficult position, making it harder for emergency units to reach those inside safely.
Slow-moving vehicles also create added risks on rural highways. Drivers may need extra time and space to notice a vehicle ahead, reduce speed, and avoid a sudden lane change or rear-end impact. After a severe roadway accident, reviews often focus on vehicle speed, following distance, traffic flow, and where each vehicle traveled before contact.
