What Are the Risks of Riding in a Side-by-Side Vehicle With Multiple Passengers?
Side-by-side vehicles, also called UTVs or utility task vehicles, are built for off-road use and are designed to carry a limited number of passengers, typically two to four depending on the model. When more people ride than the vehicle is rated for, the risk of losing control or rolling over increases. These vehicles have a higher center of gravity than standard cars or trucks, which makes them more prone to tipping, especially on uneven ground or during sharp turns. Rollover crashes in UTVs can be particularly dangerous because passengers may be partially or fully exposed. Helmets and proper restraints are strongly recommended for all riders. Many states have specific rules about where these vehicles may be operated and how many passengers they may legally carry.
