The crash occurred at 11:24 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 30 and State Route 89. Officials reported that 66-year-old Jeanette E. Vibbert of North Ridgeville was driving a tan 2006 Hyundai Elantra south on SR-89 and did not yield while attempting to turn west onto U.S. 30. Her car was struck on the passenger side by a westbound 2016 gray Jeep Cherokee driven by 45-year-old Jason C. Hazen of Jeromesville.
Both vehicles left the south side of U.S. 30 and entered a grass median. Hazen was unharmed, while Vibbert was taken to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision.
Emergency units and local towing services responded to the scene. Further information on the crash had not been released immediately. The examination of the wreck remains underway. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
Key Factors in Intersection-Related Crashes
Intersections are a common location for serious collisions, particularly when drivers fail to yield or misjudge traffic flow. Stop signs and traffic signals are intended to manage right-of-way, but lapses in attention or visibility can lead to high-risk situations.
Side-impact crashes, such as those involving a vehicle striking another on the passenger side, often result in more severe injuries because less structural protection exists on the sides of vehicles. Seatbelt use can significantly reduce harm, but even properly restrained occupants remain vulnerable in these types of collisions. Awareness of other vehicles, adherence to traffic controls, and cautious turning maneuvers are critical for minimizing the risk of serious accidents at intersections.
