Ottawa Township, OH (April 29, 2026) – An injury crash involving a semi truck and an SUV occurred Tuesday, April 28, at the intersection of Rd 7 and Rte 65 in Ottawa Township.
Reports show a 47-year-old man from Greensboro, North Carolina, was driving a 1999 Freightliner south on Rd 7 around 10:12 a.m. He failed to stop at a marked stop sign and entered the intersection, striking a 2022 Chevrolet Trax traveling east on Rte 65. The SUV was driven by a 33-year-old woman, who had two children in the vehicle at the time.
The driver of the SUV and both children were hurt in the crash and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. After the collision, the semi driver left the scene but was later stopped by emergency units on County Rd 6 near Pandora and taken into custody without incident.
The Freightliner sustained heavy front-end damage. Authorities suspect impairment may have contributed to the crash. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
What Factors Can Contribute to Intersection Crashes Like This?
Crashes at intersections often happen when a driver fails to obey traffic signals or signs. Stop signs are designed to control traffic flow and reduce the risk of cross-traffic collisions, especially at rural or less visible intersections.
Driver impairment can also increase the likelihood of a crash. Alcohol, drugs, or fatigue can slow reaction time and affect judgment, making it harder to notice traffic controls or other vehicles. In larger vehicles like semi trucks, longer stopping distances can make these risks even greater.
Visibility, road conditions, and speed may also influence how these crashes occur. Even a brief lapse in attention can lead to a serious impact when vehicles cross paths at an intersection.
