Why Late-Night Pedestrian Crashes Can Be Deadly
Late-night pedestrian crashes can be severe because drivers and people walking may have less time to react. Darkness can reduce visibility, especially on wider roads where vehicles travel at steady speeds.
A pedestrian has no protection during impact with a vehicle. The force can cause major injuries to the head, chest, legs, or internal organs. If the impact moves a person into another lane, the risk of further harm can increase.
Road design can also play a role when it come to injury severity. Wide lanes, limited lighting, and longer crossing distances may make late-night crossings more dangerous. Vehicle speed, sight distance, and the point of impact can all affect how serious the crash becomes.
