What Is Reviewed After a Fatal Crash Involving a Stopped Vehicle?

When a fatal crash involves a vehicle stopped on an interstate, investigators examine several pieces of evidence to better understand how the collision occurred. They may review the position of the vehicles, roadway markings, lighting conditions, traffic patterns, and any physical evidence left at the scene. Electronic data from the vehicles and witness statements may also provide additional information.

Investigators can also evaluate visibility, weather conditions, and the amount of time the disabled or stopped vehicle remained in the travel lane before the impact. Medical reports and vehicle damage may help document the severity of the collision. These findings contribute to a detailed reconstruction of the incident and help establish a timeline of events.
