How Single-Vehicle Crashes on Curves Can Lead to Serious Injury
Crashes that occur on curved sections of roadway often involve loss of control as vehicles transition through the turning path. Speed, road grip, and driver reaction all play a role in how a vehicle handles a curve.
When a car leaves its lane on a curve, it may strike roadside objects such as curbs, embankments, or poles. These fixed objects can increase the severity of damage caused by a sudden stop.
Nighttime driving or reduced visibility can also make it harder for drivers to judge the sharpness of a bend. Even minor miscalculations in steering or speed can cause a vehicle to drift off the roadway.
Road design and driver awareness are key factors in reducing curve-related crashes, especially on rural highways where roadside hazards are closer to travel lanes.
