Why Pedestrian Crashes on Interstates Are Often Fatal
Pedestrian collisions on interstate highways are among the most dangerous roadway events because vehicles travel at much higher speeds than on city streets. Drivers may also have limited time to react, especially during overnight or early morning hours when visibility is reduced. Even with headlights and roadway lighting, spotting a person on the interstate can be difficult until moments before contact occurs.
Bus-related pedestrian crashes can involve additional hazards because of the vehicle’s larger size and weight. Highway lanes may remain closed for extended periods afterward while investigators document roadway evidence and remove damaged vehicles.
In many interstate pedestrian cases, investigators review traffic patterns, lighting conditions, driver visibility, and how the person entered the highway to better determine the sequence of events.
