Lawrence, NY (May 31, 2026) – One person died, and four others were seriously hurt following a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of County Route 55 and U.S. Route 11 in the Town of Lawrence on Friday, May 29.

According to investigators, the wreck was reported at about 9:19 p.m. A preliminary review found that a 2017 Chevrolet Traverse was traveling north on County Route 55 when it reportedly failed to stop at the intersection and struck the front passenger side of a 2016 Honda CR-V that was heading east on U.S. Route 11.

The Chevrolet driver, identified as 55-year-old Ricky L. DeShane of Brasher Falls, was taken to a nearby medical facility with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The Honda driver, 49-year-old Jesse P. Kaska of Chateaugay, was also taken to a hospital and was reported in stable condition.

Passengers in the Honda included Tammy L. Brunette-Kaska, 53, of Chateaugay, a 17-year-old male from Chateaugay, a 16-year-old female from Chateaugay, and a 14-year-old male from Brushton. All occupants of the Honda were reported to have sustained serious harm. The three teens were later transferred to another hospital, where they remained in stable but critical condition. Brunette-Kaska died after arriving at the hospital. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends mourning this loss.

What Factors Can Increase the Severity of Intersection Crashes?

Intersections are among the most complex parts of any roadway because traffic from different directions must cross, merge, or turn within a limited space. When a driver fails to stop, misjudges another vehicle’s speed, or overlooks a traffic control device, the chances of a serious crash can increase significantly.

Side-impact collisions, usually called T-bone crashes, can be particularly severe because the sides of most vehicles have less structural protection than the front or rear. The severity of injuries may also depend on vehicle speeds, seat belt use, seating positions, and the point of contact between the vehicles.

Road design, visibility, lighting conditions, and driver reaction times can also influence the outcome. In many cases, a detailed review of physical evidence, vehicle damage, and roadway conditions helps provide a clearer picture of how a collision unfolded.
