Why Pedestrian Crashes on Multi-Lane Highways Are Often Fatal
Pedestrian accidents on wide, multi-lane highways can be especially severe. Vehicles typically travel at higher speeds on major corridors, leaving little time for drivers to react when someone is in the roadway.
At night, visibility can be reduced for both drivers and pedestrians. Street lighting, dark clothing, and traffic flow all affect how quickly a person on foot can be seen. On busy roads, a pedestrian struck by one vehicle may also be at risk of being hit by another if traffic cannot stop in time.
Crossing outside marked crosswalks or in areas without traffic signals can further increase danger. Even a brief gap in traffic can close quickly, making highway crossings particularly hazardous.
