According to dispatch information, the emergency began shortly after midnight when a caller reported that someone may have jumped from a bridge onto the freeway. Minutes later, reports indicated the person was in the No. 3 lane, and a fourth vehicle struck them. Four vehicles were involved, though they had not initially pulled over.
Emergency units shut down all southbound lanes for several hours while crews worked on the roadway. The coroner was requested, and traffic remained at a standstill before a hard closure was established from the Grand Avenue on-ramp. Tow operations and roadway cleanup continued until all lanes reopened at approximately 2:55 a.m. The cause of what happened remains under investigation as additional facts are gathered.
