What Makes Pedestrian Crashes Especially Dangerous
Pedestrian crashes often result in serious injuries because people on foot have little protection when struck by a moving vehicle. Even at lower speeds, the force of contact can lead to broken bones, head trauma, or other major medical concerns.
Roadways with heavy traffic, multiple lanes, or limited crossing areas may increase pedestrian risks. Visibility can also be a factor, depending on weather and lighting, as well as how quickly drivers notice someone near the roadway.
After a pedestrian-vehicle collision, investigators may review traffic patterns, vehicle speeds, and the position of the pedestrian before contact. Medical evaluations are also common because some injuries may not be fully apparent immediately after the crash.
