Miami, FL (June 2, 2026) – A construction accident in Downtown Miami left one worker dead and another seriously injured Monday afternoon after a structural element collapsed at a building site.
The incident occurred near the intersection of Northeast Sixth Street and North Miami Avenue, while two workers were on the upper level of a construction site. Authorities said a structural column suddenly gave way, collapsing and trapping both workers beneath it.
Emergency units responded to the scene and transported the two victims to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. One of the workers, identified as 25-year-old Maria Fernanda Gonzalez Garcia, was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The second worker remains hospitalized and is expected to face a long recovery.
The conditions that led to the collapse have not been publicly detailed, and no further information about contributing factors has been released.
