Phoenix, AZ (March 9, 2026) – A 75-year-old man died after a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Indian School Road in Phoenix on Friday afternoon, March 6.
The collision happened shortly after 1:30 p.m. when one vehicle reportedly ran a red light and struck another car in the intersection. Emergency units arrived and found 75-year-old John Stephen Conway with serious injuries.
Conway was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The other driver, identified as 18-year-old Selene Alexandra Garcia Telix of Phoenix, was treated for injuries at the scene before being taken to a hospital. After her release from the hospital, Telix was booked into jail in connection with the crash. Officials said impairment did not appear to be a factor, though investigators believe speed may have contributed to the collision.
Authorities continue to gather evidence and speak with witnesses as the case moves forward. They continue to investigate the cause of the crash. More details will be released as soon as they become available.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
How Speed Can Affect Intersection Crashes
Speed can significantly influence the severity of crashes that occur at intersections. When a vehicle enters a crossing area too quickly, drivers often have less time to notice traffic signals, slowing vehicles, or cars already moving through the intersection.
Higher speeds also increase the distance needed to stop. Even a small increase in speed can reduce the ability to brake in time to avoid another vehicle. This can lead to side-impact crashes, which often cause serious harm because vehicle doors provide less protection than the front or rear.
Intersections in busy urban areas can be especially challenging. Drivers must watch traffic signals, turning vehicles, pedestrians, and cross traffic at the same time. When speed is added to these conditions, the chance of a severe crash rises because reaction time and stopping distance are reduced.
