Why Mid-Block Pedestrian Crossings Can Be Dangerous at Night
Pedestrian accidents that happen outside marked crosswalks are often more serious because drivers may not expect someone to enter the roadway between intersections. At night, reduced visibility can make it harder for drivers to notice pedestrians until they are very close.
Roads with multiple lanes or steady traffic flow can increase the risk of severe injuries during these crashes. Street lighting, dark clothing, and vehicle speed could also affect how quickly a driver can react to someone crossing mid-block.
Hit-and-run collisions can create additional challenges after a crash because investigators may initially have limited information about the vehicle involved. In many cases, roadway evidence, witness accounts, and nearby surveillance footage are reviewed to help identify the driver and determine how the collision occurred.
