Why Side-Impact Collisions Can Lead to Passenger Injuries
Side-impact roadway crashes often leave passengers more exposed because there is less space between the vehicle door and the people inside. Even at moderate speeds, these impacts can lead to injuries involving the head, shoulders, ribs, or hips. Larger vehicles, including pickup trucks and SUVs, may also transfer force differently during contact.
Medical evaluations after a side-impact collision may include scans, physical exams, and monitoring for pain that appears hours later. Some people may feel fine immediately after the wreck but later develop stiffness, bruising, or dizziness. Seat belt use, vehicle size, and the point of contact can all affect how serious injuries become.
Parking lot entrances and busy commercial roads are common places for these roadway crashes because drivers are often turning into traffic while other vehicles continue through at regular speeds.
