What Makes Bridge Travel Dangerous During Icy Weather?
Bridges often freeze faster than regular road surfaces. Cold air circulates above and below the structure, which can cause ice to form even when nearby pavement appears wet.
When vehicles encounter ice, drivers may lose traction and slide into other lanes. On narrow bridge spans, there is limited room to avoid a collision. Multi-vehicle crashes can develop quickly if one driver loses control and others cannot stop in time.
Large vehicles like semitrucks require longer stopping distances, especially on slick surfaces. Reducing speed and increasing following distance during winter weather can help lower the risk of chain-reaction accidents on bridges.
