What Risks Do Mobility Scooter Users Face in Crosswalks?
People using mobility scooters often rely on marked crosswalks to move safely across busy streets. Even so, they remain vulnerable because they lack the protection that enclosed vehicles provide.
Drivers may have difficulty seeing someone seated lower to the ground, especially if traffic is heavy or visibility is limited. Turning movements and distracted driving can also increase the chance of a collision at intersections.
The speed of approaching vehicles and reaction time both influence how these crashes unfold. Clear sightlines and attentive driving can help reduce the risk for those crossing on foot or using mobility devices.
