Why Lane-Change Motorcycle Crashes Can Be Especially Dangerous
Motorcycle crashes involving lane changes can become deadly because riders have far less protection than occupants inside passenger vehicles. Even a minor impact with a larger vehicle may throw a rider from the motorcycle and lead to severe injuries.
Highways with multiple lanes and steady traffic often require drivers and riders to make quick decisions while traveling at higher speeds. Visibility can also become limited when motorcycles move between vehicles or enter a driver’s blind spot during lane changes.
After these collisions, investigators commonly examine lane positioning, vehicle damage, roadway markings, and witness statements to determine how the crash unfolded. Traffic delays are also common because motorcycle accidents often require extensive scene documentation and debris removal before highways can safely reopen.
